The Game UN:Me: A Cerebral Horror That Blends Silent Hill and Social Deduction Gameplay

The recent Day of the Devs online presentation unveiled a number of intriguing future games, but one in particular has seized attention: UN:Me. Created by Historia and Shueisha Games, this single-player adventure appears to fuse together the oppressive atmosphere of a Silent Hill title with the suspicion-driven core of Among Us.

"This is a unique experience where a girl containing multiple human souls within her must escape from a maze of the mind," explains developer Yasukazu Kawai.

Stepping Into a Shattered Mind

In UN:Me, players take control of an unnamed female protagonist seeming to be of teenage years. Inside her exist four separate personas, all possessing their own anxieties and motivations. These entities can take over spontaneously, unleashing their deep-seated phobias upon her suddenly.

Based on revealed footage, much of the action takes place within a creepy hospital, though other scenes depict the protagonist navigating a abandoned church.

A World of Individual Dread

"What makes you afraid of? What makes you uncomfortable?" poses creative lead Shun Sasaki. "Heights. Confined spaces. People in power. Elements that appear minor to others can activate a deep instinct inside us. This game delves into that concept — anxieties that are specific to each person."

The core mechanic involves controlling the persona that emerges at any given moment. However, these identities will switch against your will as you play. While exploring, each soul's anxieties become exaggerated and attack the protagonist in succession. When the soul changes, so does the particular terror the player experiences.

Eerie Visuals and a Deadly Choice

Initially, UN:Me displays striking visual similarities with the Silent Hill series. The hospital is filled with nurses all sporting the identical visage, with unnervingly wide grins. Patients in the lobby have enormous blooms where their necks should be. Floral motifs are an ever-present element, juxtaposing natural beauty with supernatural dread.

Yet, UN:Me introduces a unique mechanic. Players must determine which of the four souls haunting the heroine is the "real" one. "Each of the personas asserts that the body belongs to them," explains a developer. "Throughout the game, you must determine who is authentic."

Once players have deduced a soul is an impostor, they must eliminate it. However, because each soul can lie or hide the reality, it is very easy to make a mistake.

"Perhaps you've already eliminated the true [soul] by your own actions," a voice suggests. "The last one remaining could be a fraud. In any case, your choices are irreversible."

UN:Me does not yet have a publicly announced release date, but it is available to follow on digital storefronts.
