Los Angeles Battles Historic Heat Just Days Following Severe Winter Storm.
Following a week of torrential rains that led to inundation across areas in the city, LA is now seeing unusually hot temperatures for this time of year.
All-Time High Temperatures
During the day Friday, the mercury reached ninety-one degrees Fahrenheit in the city center, according to meteorologists. This breaks the prior high for February 27th, which was 31 degrees Celsius (88 Fahrenheit) and was established in the previous year.
"Exceptionally warm weather" were noted on forecast maps for the region.
Public Health Alerts
The weather service cautioned that Friday's weather posed an "elevated risk for heat illness" for vulnerable populations. Their recommendations suggested:
- Staying hydrated.
- Reducing outdoor activities during the afternoon hours of the day.
- Never leaving kids or animals unattended in a parked vehicle.
An Extreme Shift
This sudden spike in mercury arrives just after a intense winter storm that pummeled the state earlier in the week. That event unleashed thunderstorms, high winds, and heavy snow to mountainous regions, triggering evacuation orders for many residents.
Tragically, the severe weather also triggered a deadly avalanche in the Lake Tahoe area, which resulted in nine fatalities.
Forecast Ahead
Forecasters predict cooler conditions is coming. Readings were expected to fall to around 61°F (16°C) in downtown LA by overnight.
Additional areas that hit ninety degrees were Woodland Hills, Long Beach, and Burbank. Meanwhile, Westwood, Camarillo, Santa Maria, and Oxnard were projected to see the high 80s.
Over Saturday and Sunday, downtown Los Angeles can anticipate temperatures in the eighties, with mid-70s temperatures on tap for the week ahead.
